Chinese Track Teachers Deepen Curriculum Development

Written by Grace Yin; translated by Evangelista Barylski

Since its establishment almost five years ago, GIS’s Chinese Track has been committed to integrating immersive Chinese language teaching with the IB course framework, creating a unique curriculum at the school.

We are constantly developing, updating, and adapting course content to ensure that students learn in a Chinese immersion environment while also following the globally-recognized IB teaching philosophy.

In October 2024 GIS was pleased to invite internationally-known Chinese language education expert, Dr. Shuhan Wang, to work closely with our teaching team on consolidating and improving our curriculum design.

Dr. Wang is the President of ELE Consulting International and previously served as the Deputy Director of the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland. She was commissioned by Singapore’s Ministry of Education to serve as a consultant for the “Huan Le Huo Ban” series of Chinese teaching materials. Additionally, Dr. Wang has extensive experience consulting on numerous Chinese language education projects in the United States and abroad.

At the beginning of this school year in 2024, Dr. Wang visited GIS in person for the first time and facilitated several training sessions for teachers. These trainings helped them gain a deeper understanding of both teaching concepts and practical applications.

Through interactive discussions, Dr. Wang guided teachers in exploring new teaching methods and breaking through the limitations of traditional language teaching. She emphasized the importance of language as a tool and encouraged teachers to use Chinese flexibly across all subjects to help students improve their applied language skills.

Through in-depth collaboration with Dr. Wang, GIS’s Chinese Track teachers gained invaluable new resources and strategies. Dr. Wang spoke highly of the Chinese Track and expressed strong support for our extracurricular programs, such as the after-school teen class.

Dr. Wang has high expectations for the development of GIS’s Chinese Track. She believes that through the process of continually optimizing our curriculum, the program will get stronger and stronger. We are also confident in the future, and we look forward to further collaboration with Dr. Wang!
