School Counselor

School Counselor for grades 1st - 7th

GIS is looking for an educational professional dedicated to supporting students with diverse learning needs. This person will work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and external providers to ensure that all students receive the support they need to succeed academically and socially. The role involves creating and implementing individualized learning plans, conducting class and individual observations, and providing targeted interventions to help students overcome learning challenges.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Individualized Learning Plans: Develop and support implementation of personalized learning plans to support student success.
  • Classroom Support: Collaborate with teachers to integrate effective teaching strategies and classroom management techniques.
  • Assessment and Evaluation: Help to identify learning differences and recommend appropriate interventions.
  • Small Group Instruction: Provide targeted support to small groups of students to address academic and social-emotional needs.
  • Consultation: Act as a consultant to teachers, offering advice on best practices for differentiating instruction and managing diverse classroom dynamics.
  • Parental Support: Assist teachers in communicating with parents about their child's progress and any special needs.
  • External Collaboration: Guide and coordinate referrals to outside specialists and work collaboratively with external providers.
  • Professional Development: Support teaching staff through training and resources to enhance their ability to meet the needs of all students.
  • School Community Outreach: Collaborate with the school and parents to develop and share strategies that support students' academic and social-emotional development.
  • Observations: Conduct classroom observations to gather data and inform instructional strategies.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Apply a culturally responsive approach to support students from diverse backgrounds.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

  • Relevant degree and experience in education, special education, counseling or a related field
  • Proven experience in a similar role
  • Strong understanding of SEL principles
  • Familiarity with Orton-Gillingham or other multi-sensory instructional techniques
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Flexible and adaptable mindset
  • Collaborative team player
  • Positive, enthusiastic, and strengths-based approach
  • Fluency in German or Mandarin a plus!
