Marie Johnson

Hello everyone, my name is Marie and I am beyond excited to be a part of the team at the GIS. Teaching and painting are two of my greatest passions. I was born and raised in a small town in Northwest Germany, close to the border to the Netherlands and the North Sea. Love brought me to Oregon, and I am excited to be starting my new life here. I grew up knowing I would be an empathetic, fun, and patient teacher and to be my students' safe space in moments of need. 

In the year 2022, I graduated from the University of Osnabrück with the highest distinction for my Master’s of Education in the subjects English and Art Education. During my studies, I focused on topics such as culture and identity, and the challenges of cultural representation. Throughout the years, I have gained extensive experience in teaching German as a second language, English, and Math to students of various ages and language levels as a result of working with young refugees in Germany. There, I helped children cope with existing traumas, helped them navigate school life and sparked their motivation to learn German. 

In my free time, I enjoy rock climbing and bouldering, plants and gardening, hiking and camping, and generally spending time in nature. I also like to cook and come up with my own vegetarian recipes. I love singing and I am a passionate painter.

I am eager to spark your children’s joy in creative activities, artistic expression, and focus on their individual academic goals. I love to laugh, and I believe that a big part of learning is making it fun, and to enjoy what we’re doing.
