Celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month with Social and Emotional Learning at GIS

As we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month this May, GIS is dedicated to equipping our students with the tools they need to thrive emotionally and mentally. In a world filled with constant change and challenges, fostering mental well-being is more crucial than ever, especially for our young learners.

At the heart of our approach lies the Second Step Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) program, an integral part of our curriculum at GIS. With its emphasis on foundational skills like empathy, emotion management, and problem-solving, Second Step provides a solid framework for nurturing resilience and promoting positive mental health among children. These engaging lessons not only teach essential life skills but also create a supportive space for emotional exploration and growth.

GIS is committed to empowering our community to take meaningful action to provide our learners with a strong start towards holistic well-being. With our SEL curriculum and beyond, we encourage our students and families to:

LEARN about emotions and coping strategies: Through interactive activities and discussions, we help children understand the range of emotions they experience and provide them with tools to manage these emotions effectively.

ACT by practicing coping skills: From deep breathing exercises to positive self-talk, we empower children to actively manage stress and navigate challenges with confidence and resilience.

ADVOCATE for themselves and others: We empower our students to advocate for their own needs and to support their peers in creating a culture of empathy and understanding. We collaborate closely with families to connect them with resources and supports, ensuring that every child has access to the care they deserve.

To embrace the spirit of Mental Health Awareness Month, let us reaffirm our commitment to prioritizing mental well-being for every child at GIS. Together, we are building a future where emotional resilience and empathy are valued as highly as academic achievement.

Join us in nurturing minds and hearts, as we embark on this journey towards a healthier, more compassionate world.
